Helping Tweens and Teens Navigate Life’s Transitions with Confidence

Adolescence can be exciting, confusing, challenging, and transformative—all at the same time. As young people begin discovering who they are and where they fit in the world, they often encounter new pressures, emotions, and experiences that can feel overwhelming, especially in a world that is rapidly evolving and ever-changing.

At Thea Integrative Therapy, we provide compassionate, affirming therapy for tweens, teens, and adolescents. We create a safe and supportive space where young people can talk openly, build confidence, strengthen coping skills, and explore their identities without fear of judgment. Largely, we do this through genuine, personal connection, and through truly attuning to your child’s needs and interests to build a relationship that is characterized by comfort and depth, and meets them exactly where they are.

Whether your teen is struggling with anxiety, depression, self-esteem, friendship challenges, school stress, family conflict, or questions about identity or gender, therapy can offer meaningful support and guidance, and a place where your child can feel safe to truly express themselves.

Adolescent Mental Health Therapy: Common Reasons Teens Seek Counseling

Today's teens and tweens face tremendous pressure. Between academic stress and perfectionism, social media setting unattainable physical and lifestyle expectations, changing relationships and social challenges, and growing responsibilities, many young people find themselves carrying more than they know how to manage as they are developing into young adulthood.

Thea Integrative Therapy supports teens in these areas:

  • Anxiety and excessive worry

  • Depression and low mood

  • Loss of interest in activities

  • School stress and academic pressure

  • Social anxiety and friendship difficulties, bullying

  • Self-esteem and confidence struggles

  • Perfectionism and burnout

  • Emotional overwhelm

  • Family conflict

  • Life transitions and adjustment challenges

  • Trauma and difficult experiences

  • ADHD and executive functioning concerns, such as academic concerns

  • Autism and social challenges

  • Body image struggles, including disordered eating

  • Self-harm behaviors and suicidal ideation

  • Identity exploration and self-discovery, including gender and sexuality

Many parents are surprised to learn that therapy isn't only for times of crisis. Counseling can also help adolescents develop resilience, emotional intelligence, and healthy coping skills before challenges become overwhelming, in order to better prepare them to launch into young adulthood

LGBTQIA+ Affirming Therapy for Teens and Adolescents: Affirming Relationships are Necessary for Safety

Every young person deserves a space where they feel accepted, respected, and understood. Celine of Thea Integrative Therapy was once a closeted Queer teenager in a homogenous community, and can attest to affirming relationships being life changing (and life-saving).

Pulling from our own life experiences, we provide LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy for adolescents who may be exploring their sexual orientation, navigating coming out experiences, managing family dynamics, or seeking support for challenges related to identity and belonging.

Many LGBTQIA+ youth face unique stressors that can impact their mental health, including:

  • Fear of rejection

  • Bullying or discrimination

  • Social isolation

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Family conflict

  • Minority stress

  • Questions about identity

  • Issues in self-acceptance and confidence

Importantly, mental health and community support for LGBTQIA+ young people is a necessity for maintaining their safety and future. Statistically, LGBTQIA+ young people are at much higher risk for suicidal ideation or action, with 39% of LGBTQIA+ youth considering suicide, including 46% of transgender young people. Gender affirming relationships and communities are statistically shown to reduce suicidality among LGBTQIA+ youth, although nearly half (49%) of LGBTQIA+ teens experienced bullying, leading to higher rates of suicidal gestures.

At Thea Integrative Therapy, our approach is affirming, inclusive, and rooted in respect for each person's lived experience. We strive to create a therapeutic environment where adolescents can safely explore who they are and build confidence in themselves, while modeling the lived experience of a Queer, Gender-fluid person whom they can look to for support and guidance. Our goal is to support your teen or tween’s connection to their authentic self, not to shape it.

Gender-Affirming Therapy for Transgender, Nonbinary, and Questioning Youth

Gender exploration can be a meaningful—and terrifying—part of a young person's journey.

At Thea Therapy, we provide gender-affirming care for transgender, nonbinary, gender-diverse, and questioning adolescents. We offer a supportive space where young people can explore their experiences, process challenges, and receive affirming mental health care. We also connect with teens and families to assist them in navigating medical and legal transitions; including consultation, paperwork guidance, referrals, and letter writing.

Gender-affirming therapy may support youth who are:

  • Questioning gender identity

  • Navigating social transitions

  • Experiencing gender dysphoria

  • Processing family responses

  • Building self-acceptance

  • Strengthening coping skills

  • Developing supportive relationships

Our goal is to help each adolescent feel seen, supported, and empowered while honoring their unique journey.

Parent Support and Family Involvement in Teen Therapy

At Thea Integrative Therapy, we understand that parents are an important part of their children’s healing process, and that integrating the family unit leads to more successful therapeutic outcome.

While adolescents really benefit from having a confidential space to talk openly, we also recognize the value of supporting parents and caregivers along the way. When parents have a clear understanding of their child’s needs, they can integrate this clarity into their relationship.

During quarterly parent sessions, therapeutic observations and recommendations are shared, that can be integrated to improve parent-child relationships. Indeed, Celine acts as an interpreter for teens and their parents, to inform greater mutual understanding and stability.

On a quarterly basis, therapy may include parent sessions focused on:

  • Improving communication

  • Strengthening family relationships

  • Understanding adolescent development

  • Supporting emotional health at home

  • Cultivating stability and safety

  • Navigating identity-related conversations

Our goal is to help families build stronger connections while supporting each teen's growth, resillience, and independence.
